The Geographe Wine Region of WA
- introducing the Ferguson Valley

The Geographe region is small and compact, with a strong reputation for the production of fine wine. Chardonnay, Semillon, Shiraz, Merlot, Sauvignon/Blanc, Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon are the most widely planted varieties. Rose, blended whites and reds and are also proving to be very successful and popular.

The Geographe Wine Growing Region boasts a broad selection of award-winning red and white wines. These wineries are set in delightful locations, some against the backdrop of Jarrah forest and Tuart forest, while others offer picturesque farmland surrounds. The drives through this region are stunning and memorable.

There have long been many award-winning wines in the Capel district of the Geographe region. The latest rising sensation in the industry is the Ferguson Valley, which is shaping up to be a spectacular region for wines and tourism. Other areas boast the expanses of vines in the Harvey area, the Donnybrook area and Busselton.

The Geographe Region takes in the curve of land on Geographe Bay and extends inland. The region is flanked by the rolling green hills of the Darling Range which rises gradually to the east. The coastal area has been dubbed 'tuart country' after the soils which are deep, sandy and overlaying limestone. These soils drain well but are low in nutrients.  The region is dissected by the Capel, Collie and Ferguson Rivers, which have deposited alluvial soils that are much higher in nutrient content. In this area are the famous Jarrah trees of Western Australia.

The Ferguson Valley has a Discovery Jarrah Forest for bush walkers following Living Windows experiences.

The climate, essentially Mediterranean, is cooled and humidified by the Indian Ocean.  Harvest time is mid February to early April. Vineyards closest to the sea are the first to begin their harvest.
