Country Cousins Tourist Information

Perth Hills Wine Region

Many see the Perth Hills as one of Western Australia’s best kept secrets.     Beautiful forest, extraordinary wildflowers, tranquil bushwalking trails, bird and animal life, creeks and waterfalls, are some of the scenic attractions.

Vistas of vineyards and orchards in the valleys, or the rolling farmland and vineyards to the north, make motoring a delight, and driving into the Perth Hills to sample the vintner’s wares is a very pleasant outing, particularly in the spring and autumn.

Roadside fruit stalls, asparagus straight from the farm, and beautiful open gardens delight the visitor, who can stay at one of the country-style bed and breakfast facilities for the ultimate in peace and relaxation,  explore the forest from the back of a camel,  buy a memento from one of the local potteries or art and craft stops, or canoe on peaceful Lake Leschenaultia.     Another unique experience is to visit the Perth Observatory in the Bickley Valley.

There are also first class restaurants and cafes throughout the region, including the award-winning Darlington Estate Winery Restaurant, and the Carosa Vineyard Restaurant in Mt Helena, and beautiful picnic and barbeque spots.

For a lesson in the region’s historic past, the Kalamunda History Village, built around the original Hills Railway Station, is well worth a visit, followed by afternoon tea at the Mahogany Inn, WA’s oldest remaining Inn, or a visit to the Mundaring Weir and nearby Mundaring Weir Hotel, built in 1898.

To the south are the lovely Serpentine Falls and other picnic spots, and the historic Chestnut Farm, established in 1859 and now the site of the state-of-the-art Millbrook Winery.

Interest is growing in the region as another visitor destination within an hour from Perth.
